“If
we want to make this great State of Pakistan happy and prosperous, we should
wholly and solely concentrate on the well-being of the people, and especially of masses and the poor”. ( Muhammad
Ali Jinnah).
Pakistan is a country of about 210 million people with full natural resources
since independence, but still not respected in the world community. Although,
Pakistan is rich in resources with very limited development in every field
which is a serious concern. Accordingly, Pakistan is dependent on World Bank,
IMF and foreign donations.
Pakistan is a developing country and its society is faced with a myriad of
social problems. These issues are population growth, poverty, unemployment,
gender discrimination, child labour, and the health sector conditions. Some
other problems such as inequality of wealth distribution, humans and drugs
trafficking, inter-class struggle and target killing are increasing over time.
The social life and the peace of mind of the people are affected by the issues.
Population Growth:- The biggest challenge to the country is the ever-growing population. Based on Worldometers elaboration of the UN data in 2019, the total population of Pakistan was 216 million. This is 2.81 per cent of the global population making Pakistan is the fifth most populated country. Furthermore, these demographics have increased to 220 million when the Covid-19 pandemic struck. It is predicted that by the years 2050, Pakistan will be the most third populated country. This is an alarming situation that will cause immense pressure on a single-supporter family head.
Causes:- The causes of overpopulation in Pakistan are high fertility, poverty, illiteracy especially of women, religious contrasts, beliefs, customs, failure of proper implementation of policies.
Another reason is that government did not have a monitoring system in place to regulate health centres or keep records of the population growth even though the population welfare program of Pakistan is one of the oldest in the world but it has not yielded the kind of progress as compared to other countries like Bangladesh and Indonesia. ( Muhammad Qasim: The News).
Solution:- Our government should plan to start social marketing on a national scale about the danger of overpopulation. There is a large number of orphan children in our country, they need parental love and care. We can focus on adoption to stop population explosion and the government should give due concession to the families who adopt children in the country. The government should strictly stop child marriage and early marriage especially in rural areas where this problem is in prevalent form. The government can offer baby bonuses to families for controlling the population
The government would also have to work on female empowerment, education and rights. The females tend to have fewer children after becoming more educated and economically independent.
In the same way, the government needs to change people's religious mindset and implement family planning policies.
